So this will tell you how dumb I am - 1)How do I make a 'system restore point'? 2)Regarding getting rid of any driver remnants, would that include deleting the folder that I downloaded from HP for the HP LaserJet 1000 host based driver? IE the one I was supposed to browse to?

I'm missing something here. The closest operating system for the HP 1000 is windows XP. I did download that into a folder 'lj1000hb' earlier. Is one of the files in that folder 'the driver' that you are referring to? IE I'm not seeing what I am supposed to right click on. Thanks, Betta.
If you try to use an xp driver, it will not work. You must right click to tell the computer to make the changes necessary to make it work in Windows 7. A system restore will be made in case of problems.
If that is the case we can go back into time and fix it. Go to help and support, in the start up menu, found by clicking on the start button. If the printer does not show in devices and printers you are ok. Driver is removed. Get of any folders that were made because you tried to download already. I deleted the download I did before and went back and downloaded again and stored in my documents. I went to the.exe file and right clicked. The choices did not include anything about running in compatibility mode. The only things I saw that might be appropriate were: 'Run as administrator' or 'Troubleshoot compatibility' Does this make sense, and if so, which do I choose? BettaNot good if the options are not there it is a bad sign. But it appears that you are doing everything right. Choose trouble shoot compatilitity, since that is the problem.
So far I still haven't had any luck. One of my problems is that I'm not getting the same messages or error messages that you have suggested I should get. When I re-attached my printer and started my computer up again, it did not indicate anything about the printer. So I went to the control panel and it showed my printer installed, with an exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle. I right-clicked and chose to 'troubleshoot'. But I got a message that an unexpected error had occured, and there were no other options but to close the window. Next thing I did was try to install a similar printer (I chose an HP 2200).
It installed OK from the list of printers, but I couldn't fool my computer into thinking that the printer I had connected to the USB port was the 2200. It still knows its a 1000 attached. I also tried right clicking on the 1000 host based download and told it to run compatibility, (which I had already done before, before re-attaching my printer). It seemed to go away and do something, but when all was said and done, it still can't run my printer. Very frustrating. Why would Windows/MS care whether I have to buy a new printer or not? They aren't the ones selling printers.
Do they get some sort of kickback from the printer manufacturing companies??? If you try to use an xp driver, it will not work.

Uninstall any traces of old drivers. Unplug your printer, and unattach it from the computer. Then right click on the link to put into compatabilty mode. Then click on the driver link in your documents. When told to do so, plug in and turn on printer. Then, lets see what to do, OH yes, begin to print.
