You'll need a 64MB Flash Card or bigger. You can still run X with a few minor programs but you'll have to remaster DSL to shrink it or you can create your own distro from scratch. Another option is to use a Linux Terminal Server and boot the device via PXE. Some of these devices have the compact flash card glued or soldered to the motherboard so you may not be able to remove it. If you can boot off USB then you should be able to install and boot Linux off the internal flash card.
